Earp Cohn partner Blair C. Lane, Sr. has launched the New Jersey E-Bike & E-Scooter Injury Law Center, a new online resource for riders, pedestrians and families affected by e-bike and electric scooter accidents.
The website provides information about New Jersey’s e-bike and e-scooter laws, common causes of accidents, potential sources of legal responsibility and practical steps injured individuals can take following an accident. The resource reflects Lane’s personal injury experience and Earp Cohn’s broader commitment to helping individuals and families manage serious and often unexpected legal challenges.
“Most people do not begin researching these laws until an accident has already happened,” Lane said. “By then, they may be dealing with medical treatment, lost income, insurance questions and uncertainty about what to do next. We created this resource to give injured people and their families a clear and reliable place to start.”
The launch coincides with new e-bike requirements that took effect in New Jersey on July 19, 2026. Riders generally must be at least 15 years old and possess either a valid driver’s license or an e-bike license. E-bikes must also be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Insurance is required for motorized bicycles, while low-speed electric bicycles must be registered but do not require insurance.
Low-speed electric scooters remain subject to separate state and local regulations. Depending on the municipality, local rules may govern whether scooters can be operated on sidewalks, trails or other public areas.
Accidents involving e-bikes and electric scooters can raise complicated questions about who is responsible. Although a negligent driver may be involved, liability could potentially extend to other individuals, businesses or public entities.

Unsafe roads, potholes, debris, poorly maintained bike lanes, vehicle dooring incidents and defective brakes, batteries or motors may also contribute to an accident.

Additional steps may include contacting law enforcement, documenting the scene, photographing the vehicles and surrounding conditions, gathering witness information and preserving the damaged bike or scooter.
Injured individuals should also use caution when communicating with insurance companies or signing documents before understanding their legal rights.
